The institutional mandate of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) is to promote, protect and restore the environment, ensure good quality of life, enhance the sustainable use of natural resources and prevent and control pollution. Its operational objectives include the publication of national legal acts, participation in international initiatives on environmental protection, and the implementation of EU environmental policies.

In relation to climate changes issues, IMELS is responsible for:

  • promoting initiatives and identifying appropriate policy instruments to address the impacts of climate change in terms of both mitigation and adaptation;
  • adopting measures to implement international commitments arising from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Kyoto Protocol;
  • supporting coordination and managing international relationships relevant to the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol;
  • implementing activities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation within the framework of international conventions and protocols; and
  • promoting and coordinating the participation of the public administration in financial and international cooperation mechanisms in the environmental field.
