Autonomous Province of Trento, Italy

The Autonomous Province of Trento is a public authority located in the north east of Italy. It covers an area of approximately 6,200 square kilometres and has a population of around 500,000 living in more than 200 municipalities. It has a typical alpine landscape: 70 percent of its area is located at an altitude of over 1,000 metres above sea level, while 50 percent is covered with woodland.

By virtue of a statute signed in 1972, the government of the province has wider competencies than other Italian regions. It enjoys very wide legislative, administrative and financial autonomy in the most important fields of public government, including environmental protection, energy planning, territorial development and planning, tourism, industry and SMEs, schools, universities, culture, infrastructure, welfare, public health, agriculture and forests, and innovation and research. In particular, the government of the province has direct competence in relation to the water concession for the production of hydroelectric power. In this sector it has adopted the Energy and Environmental Management Plan (2003); the Water Conservation Plan (2004); and the Public Water Use Efficiency Master Plan (2006).
